Waternish on the Isle of Skye is the the ideal location for all outdoor activities.  Whether your chosen activity is walking, climbing, birdwatching, painting or photography – there is ample scope to indulge your passion here! From your doorstep you can explore a number of beautiful coastal, hill and forest walks. In our area there are a great many seabirds as well as the Golden and Sea Eagle.  In the surrounding waters there are Seals, Dolphins, Porpoise, Whales and Basking Sharks.

Five minutes’ drive away is the historic hamlet of Stein. Originally conceived in the eighteenth century as a model fishing village, Stein today is home to ‘The Stein Inn’, reputed to be the oldest inn on Skye. Just a few steps from the Inn is ‘Dandelion Designs’ Craft Shop/Gallery and at the end of the terrace you’ll find the renowned ‘Lochbay Restaurant‘ run by Chef Patron Michael Smith.

You can also find Craft skills on display in places such as  Skyeskins Sheepskin Fleece Tannery and Showroom, Shilasdair Yarns, Halistra Pottery and Brae Fasach Gallery.

In nearby Dunvegan there are several more eating places as well as good food shops. Portree, which is the island’s main centre and has all the usual town facilities, is about half an hour’s drive away.

For our visitors interested in local history, from nearby Dunvegan Castle, seat of the Clan MacLeod, you could take a tour round Waternish and visit Dun Hallin (an ancient iron age hill fort) and Trumpan Church – scene of a great clan battle at Ardmore between the MacDonalds of Uist and the MacLeods of Dunvegan in 1578.

For those of you looking to catch some of our beautiful clear skies and take part in a bit of star gazing, or even a glimpse at the Northern Lights Waternish Pods is the perfect location. The area has been recognised as unique to view the night sky.

Skye is a magical Island brimming with activities and fascinating things to see and do. Waternish Pods are the perfect base from which to discover it all.
